New ECPE Speaking Test (Description and Rubric)

The new ECPE Speaking Test will be effective June 2009
In September 2005 the Testing and Certification Division of the English Language Institute (ELI-UM) began a major revision of the Interactive Oral Communication Section of the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE). The content and structure of the new ECPE Speaking Test allows candidates to demonstrate the full range of their speaking ability while performing a multi-stage, semistructured task. Below you will find a detailed description of this new Speaking Test, which will be introduced with the June 2009 administration of the ECPE.

How do my ECPE results relate to MELAB or TOEFL scores?

An Honors level ECPE Certificate is roughly equivalent to a MELAB score ranging from 90 to 100, and Pass level to a MELAB range of 80 to 89. For more information about the MELAB, click here.
Those receiving an ECPE Certificate would be expected to have language skills comparable to those receiving a Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or TOEFL scores ranging from 567 to 677 or TOEFL CBT 229 to 300.
